Nominations are now open for exceptional candidates to form our Breakthrough 5 judging panel!

Over the coming months, we will be forming the expert panel which will be formed by 7-9 panel members. The judges will be an integral part of the selection process, and their expertise will make recommendations to Ofwat on which innovations are most likely to deliver a long-term impact for the sector and should be successful in receiving funding.

Our next judging panel will support Ofwat across the upcoming fifth round of the Water Breakthrough Challenge (Breakthrough 5), launching on 9 September 2024 with approximately £40 million available.  We see this competition as a real opportunity for the water sector to showcase the breadth and ambition of innovation and to shape the Fund’s future.

Nominations are open until Friday 30 August 2024.

What we are looking for

We aim to form a diverse panel whose members will bring a wide range of perspectives, with a good balance of water sector and non-water sector voices. Our panels are an integral part of the winner selection process and we will continue to draw on their expertise to select the entrants most likely to deliver long term impact for the sector.

We have identified a strong shortlist of judges, but are particularly keen to build on this with nominations from candidates with the following experience:

  • Knowledge of the Welsh water sector and its challenges and opportunities, and of Welsh customers
  • Experience in open data with insight into emerging opportunities and challenges relating to open data and AI
  • Expertise in water company operations, in both clean and waste water (e.g. have previously worked within the water sector, and specifically for a water company).
  • Insight into global approaches to innovation in water i.e. international perspectives.
  • Academic insight into water sector research

We are committed to ensuring a diverse and inclusive panel, in addition to the above we encourage nominations from:

  • People with a disability (please reach out to us for any adjustments needed)
  • Asian or Asian British candidates
  • Black, Black British, Caribbean, or African candidates
  • People from mixed or multiple ethnic groups

Judges will need to be to commit at least nine days of their time to this process, and to include at least 3 full days for the Judging panel from 1 to 3 April 2025.

Please note that nominations are not binding, and do not guarantee a candidate a place on a judging panel.
