Innovations to improve water efficiency, stop leaks and increase carbon capture among winners of Ofwat’s Water Breakthrough Challenge
Ofwat, the English and Welsh water regulator, have announced the winners of their latest innovation competition, including projects that reduce leakage, improve household water efficiency, and turn carbon dioxide generated by the water sector into useful products like paint and fertiliser.
The innovations are the winners of the Transform Stream of the second Water Breakthrough Challenge, part of a series of competitions from Ofwat, run by Nesta Challenges with Arup and Isle Utilities, and designed to drive innovation and collaboration in the water sector, for the benefit of customers, society and the environment.
This latest funding follows the announcement of the winners of the Catalyst stream in March 2022. The winners of both streams will be showcased at a free online event on 10 May 2022.
Entries to the Water Breakthrough Challenge were led by water companies in England and Wales, who were encouraged to partner widely with technology providers, startups, academia and industry to propose highly collaborative initiatives.
Water Breakthrough Challenge 3 will open in Autumn 2022. Ofwat are currently consulting on changes to this and future competitions, and will be sharing more details over the summer.
You can read about Ofwat’s proposed changes in this easy-read consultation, and share your thoughts via this online response form, or by emailing Ofwat directly.
