Enabling Whole Life Carbon Design will deliver the tools and processes required to support the tools and processes required to support the cultural and behavioural changes necessary to deliver low whole life carbon and cost solutions and ultimately ‘zero carbon emissions’ as a water industry, by empowering the sector to move from purely capital and operational carbon accounting (the measurement of capital and operational carbon footprints) to true whole-life carbon cost management.

The entire concept is completely new for the water industry, and will support the sector to:

  1. Measure whole life carbon and cost
  2. Use digital values-based visualisations that enable the rapid identification of carbon and cost hotspots during the design phase
  3. Most importantly, embed carbon as an equal decision-making metric to cost

The methodology and database templates will be shared with the rest of the UK water industry and its wider value chain to enable clear decisions based on data insights and visualisations.
