Metagenomics: Making Microbes Matter

Amount awarded: £1,349,030

Led by: United Utilities

Partners: Newcastle University, Yorkshire Water, Northumbrian Water, Anglian Water

Making Microbes Matter will take the first steps towards developing the water industry’s national biological infrastructure using metagenomics. This cutting-edge technique identifies specific microorganisms that are present in our wastewater, providing insights into the health of our wastewater treatment works to enable better management and control of our treatment processes.

“This project is a fantastic opportunity for the water industry to gain new insights into our biological infrastructure which governs our treatment processes. It will aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as delivering value for customers and the environment by increasing site efficiency and effluent quality.”
